Star Wars Imperial Rank Badges Explained: 6 Collections Compared

Imperial rank badges are colored tile plaques worn with Imperial officer costumes. To choose the right badge, match the collection, rank and screen or source reference for your character. This guide compares all six physical badge collections offered by 3DPrintProps: ISB, Imperial Navy, Imperial Army, Staff Officers, Operations & Research Officers, and Rebels & Expanded Universe Officers.

Note: this is a shopping and cosplay guide to the available 3DPrintProps configurations, not a universal canon rank chart.

What do ANH, ESB, R1, Rebels and Expanded Universe mean?

These labels identify the screen or source reference used for a badge configuration:

  • ANH: A New Hope
  • ESB: The Empire Strikes Back
  • R1: Rogue One
  • Rebels: Star Wars Rebels
  • Expanded Universe: configurations inspired by stories and character references beyond the three films listed above

Choose by collection and reference, not by rank name alone. Two options with a similar title may use a different colored-tile arrangement when they are based on different productions or source material.

How are the physical rank badges made?

The badges are finished physical cosplay accessories, not digital STL files. They are 3D printed in plastic, assembled, and finished with a chrome-painted base and colored rank tiles. Each individual tile measures approximately 1 × 1 in (2.54 × 2.54 cm). The overall badge size depends on the selected arrangement.

Should I choose a standard or magnetic backing?

Choose the standard version if you already have a preferred attachment method. Choose the optional magnetic backing when you want to attach the badge without placing pins or holes through the uniform fabric. The separate magnetic plate sits inside the garment while the badge remains on the outside.

How do I choose the correct Imperial rank badge?

  1. Identify the collection: ISB, Navy, Army, Staff, Operations & Research, or Rebels & Expanded Universe.
  2. Identify the screen or source reference: ANH, ESB, R1, Rebels, or Expanded Universe.
  3. Select the required rank on the matching product page.
  4. Choose standard or magnetic backing.
  5. Review the selected configuration before adding it to the cart.

If the required tile arrangement is not listed, contact 3DPrintProps before ordering to ask whether a custom configuration is possible.

Imperial rank badge FAQ

Are these physical badges or digital files?

They are finished physical 3D-printed badges shipped to the buyer. They are not STL files or downloadable products.

Can I select the exact rank?

Yes. Each product page includes its own available rank configurations. Select the required branch, screen reference, rank, and backing option before ordering.

Where are the Rebels and Expanded Universe badges?

They are listed separately in the Rebels & Expanded Universe Imperial Officer Rank Badge collection. The available choices are Special Agent 1, Special Agent 2, Captain, and Grand Admiral / General.

Can I order a configuration that is not listed?

Custom tile arrangements may be available by request. Contact 3DPrintProps before ordering and provide the required branch, rank, reference, and tile arrangement.

How large are the colored tiles?

Each individual tile measures approximately 1 × 1 in (2.54 × 2.54 cm). Total badge dimensions vary with the number and arrangement of tiles.

How should I clean the badge?

Handle it by the edges when possible and clean it with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners, harsh chemicals, and abrasive materials that may damage the painted finish.

Which badge should I buy if I only know the character?

Match the character to the branch and production reference first. If you are uncertain, send the character name and a reference image through the contact page before ordering.
